Feel Better By Sitting Properly

Are you spending long days at the office getting ready to take some time off for Memorial Day or to spend time with the kids this summer?  It can be all too easy to focus on the rest and relaxation that lies ahead without focusing on the current needs of your body.  Staring at a screen can be silently hard on the body as slouching, leaning and sitting awkwardly all can wreak havoc on your back, hips and spine. 

Here are 3 major tips that can go a long way in helping your body to make it to the start of summer in one piece!

1. Desk Situation

Make sure that your computer, desk and chair are all placed in a manner that allows you to sit comfortably while maintaining good posture.  You want to ensure that your chair lets you sit at a 90 degree angle with your feet able to rest on the floor.  It is also important that your keyboard setup and work space does not require you to hunch your shoulders or over-extend your arms and neck.  If any of these are not properly situated it can leave you feeling surprisingly sore as your body is forced into a position that it should not be in.

2. Focus on that Posture

You want to ensure that your ears, shoulders and hips are in alignment as often as possible.  It’s easy to find yourself in positions that may be comfortable in the short term, but that may lead to pain later.  The key is setting yourself reminds to reset throughout the day.  Does a certain time on the clock remind you to realign or possibly each time you get up to go to the copier?  Find a “trick” that works for you and you’ll find yourself in better position more often than not.
